ETH on Mantle Needs MNT for the Next Transaction
ETH can sit on Mantle without MNT, but sending it, swapping it or using an app usually requires MNT for transaction fees; the bridge and wallet handle separate steps.

You can hold ETH on Mantle without MNT, but you generally need MNT to move that ETH or use it in an app. Mantle’s network uses MNT as its gas token: the wallet pays it to have a transaction processed. The ETH is the asset being transferred or used; MNT pays for the network work.
Why does an ETH transaction on Mantle need MNT?
When you send ETH, your wallet builds a transaction and estimates the gas it will use. Gas measures the computation the network must perform. The wallet submits the transaction, Mantle processes it, and the fee is charged in MNT. That fee applies even if the transaction moves ETH, rather than MNT.
Think of ETH as the parcel and MNT as the postage. The parcel can be in your wallet, but the network still needs its fee to deliver it. So an ETH balance alone does not normally let you send ETH to another address, approve a contract, swap tokens, or call an app on Mantle.
On Ethereum, the source side of a bridge transaction uses ETH for its network fee. Once the deposit reaches Mantle, the ETH appears as a Mantle-side token balance. The bridge transfers the asset; it does not turn that balance into MNT for future Mantle transactions. For the steps and fee points in more detail, see this fuller guide to the Mantle Bridge and ETH transfers.
Can you bridge ETH to Mantle without MNT?
Usually, you can start an ETH deposit from Ethereum without already holding MNT on Mantle. Your wallet pays the Ethereum-side fee in ETH, and the bridge message credits the destination wallet after processing. The important distinction is between depositing an asset and making a later transaction on the destination network.
Once the ETH arrives, Mantle needs MNT for the next action you sign. If you plan to use an app immediately, arrange some MNT for the same wallet before or alongside the deposit. Depending on the route available to you, that could mean bridging MNT too, receiving it from another wallet, or acquiring it through a service that supports Mantle.
Before signing, check which network the wallet is using and which asset the bridge will deliver. An ETH balance on Ethereum and an ETH balance on Mantle are separate network balances, even when the wallet address looks the same. The bridge moves value between them; it does not merge the two balances.
What should you have ready to use ETH on Mantle?
For a straightforward transfer and first use, plan for the fees on each network separately. A useful checklist is:
- For the deposit: keep ETH on Ethereum to pay the source transaction fee, and any required token approval fee.
- For activity on Mantle: have MNT in the destination wallet before you send, swap, approve, or interact with an app.
- For a withdrawal: expect to need MNT to initiate it on Mantle, then ETH on Ethereum if a separate claim transaction is required by the route.
A balance can therefore be visible and usable as an asset while still being unable to pay its own transaction fee. If your ETH has arrived but a transaction is rejected for insufficient gas, the likely gap is MNT in that same wallet on Mantle. Check the wallet’s active network and fee estimate, then add enough MNT to cover the action. You do not need MNT merely to receive or hold ETH; you need it when you ask Mantle to process a transaction.
