Starknet opens vote on studying an independent post-quantum chain

Starknet opened a seven-day, nonbinding poll on Oct. 15 asking STRK holders whether to research becoming an independent Layer 1, which could reduce the network’s dependence on Ethereum’s quantum-security timeline. The Starknet community forum proposal says the poll measures interest in research; it does not authorize a move.

Which parts of Starknet still depend on Ethereum?

The bridge and data availability arrangements are the dependencies the proposal identifies. Starknet already uses hash-based STARK proofs, and its accounts can adopt post-quantum signatures without a protocol upgrade, according to the forum post. But the bridge and data availability remain tied to Ethereum’s infrastructure and upgrade schedule. The proposal says operating as an independent Layer 1 would remove that dependency.

In simple terms, Starknet currently builds on Ethereum’s infrastructure for some functions. The proposed research would examine what changes if Starknet operates as its own base network. The forum post gives no timeline for a transition and says Ethereum-to-Starknet bridges would stay open regardless of the path.

What exactly are STRK holders voting on?

The ballot offers three choices: support further research, oppose it, or remain neutral pending more information. It runs for seven days, with results visible when it closes. As Cointelegraph reported, the poll closes Oct. 22.

A “Yes” would start research and lead to more detailed proposals and polls. It would not itself approve a transition. Any decision to proceed would require a separate governance process. A “No” would leave post-quantum work on Starknet’s current Ethereum Layer 2 path. A “Neutral” result would keep the discussion open until outstanding questions are answered, the forum proposal says.

What would an independent Layer 1 change?

It would give Starknet more control over the parts of its security that now depend on Ethereum’s upgrades. That is the security rationale stated in the proposal, which says Starknet’s own components can become quantum-resistant soon while Ethereum-linked components remain subject to Ethereum’s timeline.

The proposal also says STRK would remain the token, with no new token. For now, holders are deciding only whether to study the option. The poll sets no date for a switch, and even a “Yes” would leave that decision to future proposals and votes.
